Properties of Materials Used in O-Rings

Nitrile (Buna-N)

Excellent resistance to petroleum products. Temperature range from -65°F to 275°F (-54°C to l35°C). Nitrile compounds are superior to most elastomers with regard to compression set or cold flow, tear and abrasion resistance. Inherently they do not possess good resistance to ozone, sunlight or weather. Recommended for: general purpose sealing, Petroleum oils and fluids, water, Silicone greases and oils, Di-Ester base lubricants (MIL L-7808), Ethylene glycol base fluids (Hydrolubes).

Neoprene

Neoprene has limited resistance to petroleum lubricants and oxygen. Most elastomers are resistant to one or the other. This makes Neoprene an unusual compound in this instance. Temperature range -65°F to 300°F (-54°C to 150°C. Recommended for: Refigerants (freons, ammonia), High aniline point petroleum oils, Mild acid resistance, Silicate ester lubricants.

Ethylene Propylene (EPR)

This compound is excellent because of its excellent resistance to Skydrol and other phosphate ester type hydraulic fluids. Temperature range -65°F to +300°F (-54°C to +15O°C), Recommended for: Phosphate ester base hydraulic fluids (Skydrol, Fyrquel, PyrdrauI), Steam (to 500°F) 260°C), Water, Silicone oils and greases, Dilute acids, Dilute alkalies, Ketones (MEK, acetone), Alcohol's, Automotive brake fluids.

Flourorocarbon(Viton)

Excellent chemical compatibility and temperature range. Its working temperature range is considered to be from -20°F to 400°F(-29C to +204°C) but will take temperatures up to 600°F(316°C) for short periods of time. Compounds made from fluorocarbon elastomers should be considered for use in aircraft, automotive and other mechanical devices requiring maximum resistance to deterioration by test and functional fluids. Recommended for: Petroleum oils, Di-Ester base lubricants (MIL-L-7808, MIL-L-6085), Silicate ester lubricants (MLO-8200,MLO 851S, OS-45), Silicone fluids and greases, Halogenated hydrocarbons (carbon- tetrachloride, tichloroethylene), Selected phosphate ester fluids, Acids.

Silicone

Silicones have poor tensile strength, tear resistance and abrasions resistance. Silicones possess excellent resistance to temperature extremes. Flexibility below -175°F(-114°C) has been demonstrated. The maximum temperature for silicones for continuous service in dry air applications is 450°F. Silicones retention properties at these high temperatures is superior to other elastomeric materials. Silicones are not recommended for dynamic sealing applications because of their poor resistance to abrasion. Recommended for: High-aniline point oils, Dry Heat, Chlorinated di-phenyls.

Teflon®

Teflon® is a white thermoplastic fluoroethylene resin. Teflon® offers a combination of qualities not found in any other material. It offers chemical inertness, heat resistance, low friction, dielectric strength, weatherability, zero water absorption, toughness and flexibility. Teflon® can withstand continuous temperatures to 500°F. Teflon®'s wearability, chemical corrosion resistance and low friction properties are chief advantages in industrial applications.

Polyurethane

Polyurethane compounds exhibit high tensile strength, excellent abrasion and tear resistance, making them the toughest of the elastomers. Compression set and heat resistance are inferior to other elastomers such as Nitrile. Polyurethane compounds may be suitable for hydraulic applications which exhibit abrasive contaminants or shock loads. The temperature range for polyurethane is -65F to 212°F. Polyurethane tend to soften when exposed to higher temperatures. Available in 70 or 90 durometer.
